ELECO GR150 Lantern Installations

The 135W SOX/91W SOX-E variant of the Golden-Ray series by ELECO was the GR150. It was apparent along main roads and a few motor ways, and in some areas still is. It was also sold under the Davis branding as the Davis GR150. It's canopy was made of diecast aluminium, with an acrylic bowl.

Amington, Tamworth

Eleco GR150 lanterns can be seen installed (in small numbers) along Woodland Road, Amington. Column 36 was pictured first:

I pictured some of these at night, revealing the soft glow of the 135W SOX lamp.

Followed by column 38:

You don't see these very often anymore, however In Lichfield Industrial Estate they populate the roads along with (mostly) Philips MA50s. They run SOX 135 and most still work to this day!

The inside of this one's bowl is unusually clean. Most of these have more dirt in there by now! Nearly all of them have what appears to be a Zodion photocell, though I am not sure of the model.

A special thank you to AgentHalogen_87 for providing the next four (awesome) images of the above lantern!

The 135W SOX lamp springing to life:

Much like the Philips MA50s, they're mounted on 8m Stanton and Staveley concrete columns with large outreach brackets.

The same lantern (close-up) from a different angle:

This one's been whacked by something! Or perhaps damage just accumulated over time.... It's bracket is misaligned to the road, and the lantern's bowl seems to be broken.

Zooming in confirms this suspicion. Through the missing chunk of bowl you can see the base of the SOX tube in the lamp-holder. The bowl's smashed on both sides, leaving the very back portion almost severed from the rest of the bowl, and at risk of falling if the last stretch of plastic (at the bottom) breaks. The lamppost has been in this state since before 2009.

The lantern was discovered working on 23/12/2023.

The concrete bracket also has some-kind of industrial tape wrapped around it to keep it from rotating anymore out of line.

A453, Tamworth

These GR150s are located along the A453. These are to be replaced in a few weeks...
