Crompton Lion Lantern Installations

Crompton Lions were a rare 300W-500W GLS lantern available for both side-entry and post-top mounting. Not many of these exist anymore, with the last few surviving examples being stowed away on private land. Their canopy was of aluminium composition, with a refractor encompassing the lamp, and a bowl to enclose the lantern. Being GLS lanterns, they never had any-sort-of gear.

Mariner, Tamworth

An unusual pair of Crompton Lion lanterns here, they use what I believe are the bowls from the Argus ii (Another lantern made by Crompton) possibly as a past repair. They are located on Mariner, Lichfield Industrial Estate. Due to the fact that they are privately owned, I assume they'll be up there for much longer! They are mounted on 10m Concrete Utilities columns with concrete outreach brackets.

The second one of these lost it's bowl recently, which I found shattered on the ground below. We can now see that it had no lamp inside (or that the lamp was removed).

We can also see the fracturing concrete bracket. I wouldn't want to stand below for too long, just in case..

I revisited these installations on the 14th December 2023. Here are the pictures from that visit!

The next images are a close-up of the second (damaged) lamppost.

Neither of these installations work anymore.

On the 17th February 2024, I received four images from AgentHalogen_87, showcasing these installations from an ariel perspective.

A special thank you to AgentHalogen_87 for providing these excellent images!

On the 28/08/2024, I revisited the installations to find that their condition had deteriorated significantly, and they were now possibly on borrowed time. I have asked for these lanterns and am awaiting a response. The first thing I noticed was saran wrap and cable-ties keeping anymore concrete from falling off the bracket of the first example. The bracket looks to also be leaning forwards slightly, and may be at risk of falling off if the internal pipe is weakened.

The lantern was still going strong!

My next discovery was a tragic sight. The second examples bracket was falling apart, and there wasn't much left of the concrete on one side.

I was horrified to see that the column had a huge crack extending from the base all the way to the bracket.
