GEC Z8426 Lantern Installations
Also known as the Clearmain 8426 lantern, these fixtures were designed for group "A" lighting, where they could be found running a 250W-400W MBF/U lamp. They were side-entry only, and could easily be determined from the later-made Z8526 via the overlapping shoe. Lamp-changes on these fixtures were quite unique in their motion, with the canopy and bowl detaching and swinging down from the shoe.
Crewe
Three GEC Z8426s exist around the car park of Rail House in Crewe. Evident by the various SON floodlight fittings installed on the columns, these Z8426s are disused. These installations are likely to date to before 1967, when the Rail House was completed.
The first of these is located towards the back end of the car park. Considering these fixtures were made to run 250W-400W mercury lamps, it's unusual to see these mounted at such a low height.
The lanterns are in aged condition, but each of the bowls appear physically intact.
The second column is located outside the entrance to the building. Another newer flood is clamped to the column, more evidence that these are not in use.
This one is installed on an Abacus raise-and-lower base-hinged column.
The final example in the entrance to the car park:
The column door on this installation was loose.
