GEC Z9530 Lantern Installations

The GEC Z9530 was the remote-geared, side-entry, 35W SOX version of the GEC Nightwatch. The canopy could be made from aluminium or GRP fibreglass, and the bowl either acrylic or polycarbonate. They were fairly popular throughout the UK, often being used on side-roads. They declined in popularity through the 1990s and early 2000s due to other 35W SOX lanterns competing with them. This decrease in popularity was not exclusive to the Z9530, as the whole Nightwatch range experienced the same downturn.

Column E2 of Arden Road supports a GEC Z9530.

You can clearly see the 26W SOX-E lamp and the photocell wiring through the acrylic bowl.

Tutbury

This is a rather-strange Z9530, located on column E13 of Ferrers Avenue. It has a gear-tray, but no gear! Officially this probably is a Z9530, not a Z9532.

The bowl is slightly yellowed, but a 35W SOX lamp can be seen through it.

Although difficult to see, the absence of a gear can be seen from the front of the lantern.

The street opposite this installation, Hillcrest, supports three GEC Z9530s (these with no gear-tray!) Column E2:

Nearby, The Park Pale is also lined with GEC Z9530s.

Column E6:

Round the corner, on the same street, are some GRP Z9530s, making these at least a bit newer than the aluminium ones.
