GEC Z9545 Lantern Installations

The GEC Z9545 was never too popular due to the competition from other 90W SOX lanterns at the time. These lanterns never had a gear inside, but versions were produced with gears under different catalogue numbers (such as the Z9543 for 90W SOX). A similar situation was also present for lamp-wattages, where 135W and 180W versions were made under different catalogue numbers. This page documents only the Z9545.

Birmingham

Photographing this one was really, REALLY difficult. It took several attempts to photograph it, and I could only attempt it once per trip to Birmingham, you're about to see why! Located on the underside of a bridge going over the A38(M) is this silent survivor. There are actually two of these, but the other is even harder to get a photo of. Try taking a photo of something that isn't lit, is under a dark bridge while you're on a vehicle that's moving at 50mph and you have an idea of how many tries this took me! (Seven).
