Philips SGS201 Lantern Installations
The Philips SGS201 was a popular lantern in the UK, and could be seen in a variety of applications, from carpark lighting and residential lighting up to main road lighting. It was designed for the (at the time) new SON/HPS lamp up to 150W. Low pressure sodium and mercury vapour versions were also available, the low pressure sodium version being popular in and around Cambridge.
Amington, Tamworth
Philips SGS201s are on the rapid decline in Tamworth, with the rise of Holophane S and R-lines. A few examples remain like this one on a 5m concrete column on Tamworth Road, poking out of the trees, seemingly trying to camouflage to hide from the dreaded street light LED replacement crews. Unfortunately, one has succumbed to the column replacements. A Holophane S-Line took it's place on a new 6m Stanton column.
Lots of SGS201s exist on Brancaster Close, Amington, where they used to stand proud. As of 2024, they're beginning to be replaced with Holophane S-Lines.
This next one is on a very unusual column. The column itself is a concrete 5m column, but then it has a steel outreach bracket. This probably means the bracket was replaced (before 2009). The lantern is on Column 13 of Cycleway 22.
Damage has appeared on the bowl within the past-few weeks.
Buckingham Road, Tamworth
On Buckingham Road, Coton Green, Philips SGS201s line the main road, providing light via 100W SON lamps.
I re-visited the installation pictured above in April of 2024.
Another installation pictured on the same road.
Leyfields, Tamworth
This flat glass SGS201 exists on Milton avenue. It no longer works but it likely ran 50W SON.
Tamworth Town Centre
This next installation can be found on a cycleway in the town centre, running 70W SON. This installation is now gone, as are all the others on this pathway, being replaced with Holophane S-Lines Sometime around the 20/01/2024.
