Thorn Gamma 2 Lantern Installations

The Thorn Gamma 2 was a large post-top for vertical fluorescent lamps: either two-or-four 40W MCFA/U 2ft tubes. LM6-M aluminium alloy comprises the base-casting, with an acrylic lens and hat. These lanterns had a recommended mounting height around 5m-6m.

Just off Mosley Street are these two Gamma 2 lanterns.

The first of these lanterns has suffered some damage. The hat, locking-nut and bowl are all missing, as is one of the 40W MCFA/U lamps. Judging by the angle of the column, this was due to an impact pre-2009.

Inside the column's base are two ballasts, each one would run two lamps. There is also a Thorn AME C2216 capacitor installed below the ballasts.

There are two starters in the top of the lantern, one of the remaining lamps is also loose.

The second lantern is in much better condition (in that it has it's bowl and canopy still)!
