Thorn Gamma 3 Lantern Installations

Thorn's Gamma 3 is now nearly extinct. Few remain, but they were once used more abundantly. They were designed for use with 250W-400W MBF/U, 250W-400W SON-T, or 400W MBI/F lamps. Despite their wide circumference, they didn't support a gear, with the lamp sitting vertically in the lantern. Aside from the diffuse bowl, the lantern had no optical control, spreading light equally all around the column.

Cannock

Just off the A34 through Cannock are these stunning surviving Gamma 3s. There are three left in the present, but there were many more lining the car park until the early 2010s.

Each lantern is mounted at 5m, and due to their close-proximity to each other, I highly doubt they ran 250W MBF/U or SON-T when they were connected. It's more likely that the remote-gear gave the site owners the option to run lower wattage lamps in there. Also, notice that one of the lanterns is missing, only the base remaining! I did ask about it, and found out it was damaged in a storm several years back, and had to be removed for safety reasons.

A few of the columns have been fitted with halogen flood lights, so the lanterns haven't been active for a long time.
