Urbis Opalo 1 Lantern Installations
There were three sizes of the Opalo lantern, with the Opalo 1 being the smallest. They could run 50W-100W high-pressure sodium, 70W CDM, or 42W-57W compact fluorescent lamps. The lanterns were incredibly compact and simple in design, featuring a small aluminium canopy fitted with a polycarbonate bowl. Oddly, these lanterns were side-entry only, although adapters for post-top mounting were available.
Birmingham
Heneage Street supports a few Opalos running CFL lamps. The first of these is located on a cast-iron column! This would have supported a mercury lantern originally, which incidentally would not have differed much from the Opalo in appearance at a cursory glance.
Both of the lanterns pictured here use different radio-nodes.
The second installation is on a modern 6m column.
It is fitted with a Telensa T2E1C-G-1 node.
