My Collection: Joseph Lucas Oil Bike Lamp
The Joseph Lucas Microphote oil/paraffin oil lamp was made in Birmingham, England between 1897 and 1904. They were designed specifically towards female cyclists, which were abundant during this period. It measures 10.7cm at its longest point.
On each side are four glass quarter circles, alternating in green to red. From what I can find, this was purely a decorative choice by the designer Augustine Campbell Davidson, and was (at the time) the only bicycle lantern to do this, until more manufactures followed.
The oil container at the base can be removed to add fuel, and the glass lens can be opened at the front of the lantern.
Another engraving can be seen on the mounting handle, again confirming that this was made in Birmingham, though the exact date is not currently known.
