ELECO GR501 Lantern Installations

The ELECO GR501 was a popular 35W/55W SOX lantern in the UK. It was a small lantern, with no room for an integral gear. Consequently, the gear was always in the column's base or a gear-box. The canopy was made from aluminium, and the lantern was sometimes painted white; The polycarbonate bowl almost always suffered some yellowing.

Column E1 of the ironically named Dark Lane supports a GR501. Columns E2 and E3 support newer replacement lanterns (with E3 being a new column): an MI26 and WRTL 2600. These columns would have also had ELECO GR501s installed previously.

Against the white backdrop, a 26W SOX-E lamp's silhouette is clear, and a two-part photocell detector is seen poking out of the canopy.

The lantern is extremely narrow, having room for the lamp and photocell control, but nothing else.

A few columns on Park Road feature ELECO GR501, all running what-appear-to-be 26W SOX-E lamps.

Both columns E28 and E29 were pictured next. The lamp in the closest example doesn't look too healthy!

The lantern switched on, igniting the 26W SOX-E lamp.

Being a remote-geared lantern, the gear is stuffed onto the column's backboard. The ballast is quite rusted, but the ignitor and capacitor are in much better nick! The gear is a replacement, having been installed on 21st January 1995.

Column C2 of the adjacent street The Lawns was pictured next.

What appears to be a Royce Thompson P42 two-part detector (or something very similar) is employed here.
