Thorn Alpha 8 Lantern Installations
This page documents the earlier-made Thorn Alpha 8s with the two-part canopies. The newer model of Alpha 8 can be found here. The oldest versions of the Thorn Alpha 8 featured a canopy made entirely from aluminium, while the slightly later ones had GRP lantern bodies and aluminium shoes; they could run lamps up to 250W. These fixtures aren't to be confused with the earlier Atlas twin-lamp Alpha 8.

This double-armed column exists near the end of Herald Drive. It supports two Alpha 8 lanterns.
Both lanterns are in good condition for their age, but considering their isolated location and high mounting-height, this isn't exactly surprising!

The Thorn Alpha 8 is almost as rare as the Alpha 3 here. It really only exists in private installations (that I know of). One example of these lanterns springs to mind! These three Alpha 3s are located on Private land, yet can be easily seen from the nearby Gerard Road. I've gotta say, I got some weird looks when photographing these awesome lanterns, if only they knew how rare these are! There are three in total. They don't work anymore evident by the floods nearby and attached to one of the columns.
Their bowls are filthy. This is probably why the company decided to disconnect them and attach new LED floods in the area, as it would cost less in the long term to just install LEDs.
This lantern has solved this problem by losing it's bowl entirely! I unfortunately couldn't get close enough to see if the bowl was lying around somewhere.
